Alta Vista Independent Study Program (AVIS)
This innovative independent study program is a voluntary program of choice for any student within the SBUSD interested in pursuing independent study. At AVIS, students are paired with one of three full-time credentialed teachers, each with a maximum caseload of 25 students (per Full-time Teacher Equivalent). Each of these teachers holds a Multiple-Subject and Single Subject credential as well as being housed in various other content areas. These homeroom teachers assign, assess, and discuss work with students for all subjects except mathematics during one on one, weekly meetings. These teachers also host subject specific workshops for all students enrolled in the courses language arts, biology, world history, and U.S. history. For the content area of mathematics, one credentialed math teacher hosts course level workshops. For additional student supports, there is one full-time paraeducator (6 hours per day). The program is located at North Campus on the La Colina Junior High School campus.
This program allows for students to complete their high school graduation requirements through a variety of instructional models, each supported by a credentialed teacher. Students explore language arts, social studies, science, and practice study skills through the Summit Learning Platform Project Based Learning (PBL) units. We began implementing the Summit Learning program during the 2018-2019 school year, following successes experienced by La Cuesta Continuation High School in our family of Alt Ed programs (they began implementation with Summit in the 2017-2018 school year).
Each project on the Summit Platform is geared to a specific unit of the curriculum that is aligned to the CCSS or NGSS standards. Math I, II, and III are Summit based courses while Math Modeling and Pre-Calculus are taught through a traditional independent studies model paired with a weekly workshop. Electives and other non-Summit courses are taught by independent study teachers and/or on the online platform, OdysseyWare.
AVIS students participate in many of traditional high school activities including district and statewide assessments, field trips, emergency drills, and special events such as Back to School Night, Awards events, Graduation and others.
